Only those that suffer from fibromyalgia can truly articulate the symptoms they are experiencing. In general, it is described as chronic widespread pain and tenderness in multiple tissue sites in the body. Other than pain relief there is very little that can be done, or is there?
The pain is often exacerbated after undergoing any form of physical exercise. Whilst the average person might experience some muscle pain after exercise, particularly if they haven’t used those muscles for a while, someone with fibromyalgia will experience extreme soreness and tenderness. This can make exercise so challenging and exhausting that for some it becomes unbearable. With exercise being one of the keys to treating this condition what can we do?
Muscle pain is caused by a build up of lactic acid in the muscles themselves, so what if we could train the body to recycle the lactic acid rather than storing it. Well we can, with many athletes adapting to this efficient use of fuel. When we train the body to use fat as its primary fuel source we recycle lactic acid, reduce overall pain, reduce inflammation, improve brain function, reduce anxiety and depression which often comes with this condition, and improve overall health outcomes.
Fibromyalgia is a multifactorial condition which requires the attention of a specialised investigative practitioner to undertake a detailed case history and address all of the contributing factors. When managed correctly, amazing results can be achieved.
