I have had many concerns regarding the use of Semaglutide, also known as Rybelsus and Wegovy, since many of my patients have been offered it by their GP. This drug was created as a last resort drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mainly due to the side effects.

ree

1. Gastrointestinal Issues

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

2. Pancreatitis

There is a potential risk of developing pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, which can be serious and requires immediate medical attention.

3. Hypoglycemia

Semaglutide can cause low blood sugar levels, especially when used in conjunction with other diabetes medications. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, confusion, and fainting.

4. Kidney Problems

Some users may experience kidney issues, particularly if they become dehydrated due to gastrointestinal side effects.

5. Thyroid Tumors

Animal studies have shown an increased risk of thyroid tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma, although the relevance to humans is still unclear. If you have a family history of thyroid tumors then this drug is not recommended.

6. Cardiovascular Risks

While some studies suggest cardiovascular benefits, there may also be risks associated with heart rate and blood pressure changes.

7. Mental Health Effects

Some users report mood changes, anxiety, or depression, potentially exacerbated by weight loss and changes in body image.

8. Dependency and Misuse

There is a risk of developing a dependency on the drug for weight management, leading to misuse or over-reliance on medication rather than lifestyle changes.

9. Allergic Reactions

Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, which can include rash, itching, or more severe symptoms like difficulty breathing.

10. Not Suitable for Everyone

Semaglutide is not recommended for individuals who have a history of eating disorders.

These are the side effects we currently know about with more people reporting symptoms everyday such as hair loss, suicidal tendencies, stomach cancer, neuropathy, gallbladder inflammation, reduced skin elasticity and loss of vision. We also don't know how this drug will interact with other medications and what the long term side effects will be. Why is this? It is a drug that is being repurposed and therefore we don't have the data yet, the patient is essentially the lab rat here.

What many people don't realise is that you still have to change your diet for this medication to have any effect and once you come off it most people regain the weight they have lost and more.

Is it worth it, or is it better to address the reason for your weight gain and understand what works for you in a healthy balanced manner? I can only educate and support but I do think that the patient needs to have all of the information provided to them before they make the decision.. If you do choose to take this drug then please ensure that you have regular blood tests.
